TODAY’S MESSAGE:

Reducing Summer-time Stress

Galatians 5:22, TM

Pride and False Humility

1.        Pride causes conflict

“Pride only breeds quarrels.” (Proverbs 13:10, NIV)

“He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife.” (Proverbs 28:25, KJV)

“Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will be able to see and take the speck out of your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:5, NIV)

2.        Pride prevents personal growth

Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2, NLT)

Anyone willing to be corrected is on the pathway to life.  Anyone refusing has lost his chance.” (Proverbs 10:17, LB)

3.        Pride produces anxiety

“It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you ...” (Proverbs 29:25, GN)

“The Lord gave us a mind and conscience.  We cannot hide from ourselves.”  (Proverbs 20:27, GN)

4.        Pride angers God

“I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.” (Lev. 26:19, NIV)

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6, NIV)

True Humility

1.        Admit my sins and mistakes honestly

“A man who refuses to admit his mistakes can never be successful.  But if he confesses and forsakes them, he gets another chance.” (Proverbs 28:13, LB)

2.        Evaluate my strengths realistically

“Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities …” (Romans 12:3, Phillips)

“Each man should test his own actions.  Then he can take pride in himself without comparing himself to somebody else.” (Galatians 6:4, NIV)

3.        Enjoy my successes gratefully

“What are you so puffed up about?  What do you have that God hasn’t given you?  And if all you have is from God, why act as though you have accomplished something on your own.” (1 Corinthians 4:7, LB)

4.        Serve others unselfishly

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility, consider others better than yourselves … Look not only to your own interests, but also the interest of others.  Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 2:3-5, NIV)

5.        Depend on God continually

“Wicked people are proud.  They do not look for God; there is no room for God in their thoughts.” (Psalm 10:4, NCV)

True humility and fear of the Lord leads to riches, honor, and long life.” (Proverbs 22:4, NLT)
