The Second Generation

HOLDING ON TO TRUTH

Titus 1:1—2:1

Pastor George Cargill

Harvester Church of the Nazarene

 Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Focus: Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient, and worthless for any good deed.  2:1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.

IT IS OUR JOB TO MAKE A GOOD HAND OFF TO THE NEW GENERATION OF OUR CHURCH

Titus faced a number of challenges…

1.   He needed to           find mature leaders              from among relatively new congregations…

V7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward,

It was a matter of   holiness           15 “To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled…”

2. The church needed an example in    practical holiness       .

2 Older men… urge the young men… Older women…that they may encourage the young women

It was a matter of      holiness

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus; 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Titus 2:1 But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.
